Finally, cosmetic surgery research has a home

Plastic surgery in the modern sense has been practiced since the 1800’s, yet some efforts have been lagging in unifying research and development for the improvement of technology and processes and, in some cases, ensuring safety. Today, one center dedicated solely to cosmetic surgery research is being built in the UK. A response to the scandal over PIP breast implants in 2010, the National Institute for Aesthetic Research is a private institution funded partially by breast implant manufacturers who are being asked to donate a portion of every sale. The center’s main priority is improving patient safety during and after surgery.

PIP implants were filled with unauthorized silicone, resulting in double the rupture rate of other implants. Some women who suffered from these ruptures feel that the research center is a delayed reaction to the medical problems they are facing, as many have had to undergo a second surgery to remove and replace their defective implants. Even Rajiv Grover, President of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS), echoes these sentiments, saying it is "embarrassing" that the National Institute for Aesthetic Research was the world's first. The industry had apparently been pushing for such a facility for over a decade and only received support for it following the recent scandal.

In any field of medicine, prevention is seen as the better alternative to reaction. Dr. Lloyd Krieger, founder of Rodeo Drive Plastic Surgery, is known for his experience and high patient satisfaction rates for procedures like breast augmentation.
