Study: Cosmetic surgery may not be helpful for people with psychological issues

People usually undergo cosmetic surgery to address a range of physical problems. However, a new study shows that many of those who undergo cosmetic surgery have suffered from depression or were emotionally abused, and cosmetic surgery does little for their psychological issues.

The researchers commissioned by the UK Department of Health found out that patients' psychological conditions could get worse after undergoing a cosmetic procedure. “It is important that patients who are interested in cosmetic surgery, and are known to or appear to have psychological issues, are offered alternative treatments,” the researchers noted.

The study highlights the need for at-risk patients to become aware of how a cosmetic procedure could affect their mental health and wellbeing. It’s the responsibility of the surgeons to further identify issues underlying each cosmetic procedure request in order to assess whether or not cosmetic surgery is truly needed and which alternative interventions would provide the best outcome for each patient.

The research also emphasizes psychology’s role in cosmetic medicine, particularly in helping surgeons assess which patients may not adjust well psycho-socially after surgery. The findings clearly demonstrate the need to focus on patient screening and education and to examine critical issues linking body image to psychosocial functioning.
